My name is Daniel Story and I’m the owner of Novel Communications LLC.

I’m a writer, editor, and teacher with more than a decade of experience in higher education and academic medical fundraising.

I earned degrees in poetry from DePauw University and Penn State, and put them to good use as a development writer at the University of Chicago. Primarily focusing on medicine and the biological sciences, my work ranged from emotional, humanistic pieces about patient experiences and student scholarships to complex, technical explanations of endowment financing and epigenetics.

  • Proposals I wrote closed more than $200 million in new gifts—including center-founding gifts from $5 million to $25 million, and a hospital-naming gift of $75 million.
  • I served as lead writer and strategist for a capital campaign that raised more than $130 million in one year.
  • I designed and delivered a series of writing seminars for general fundraising staff that became a key element in new-staff onboarding and improved annual giving results.

These experiences cultivated my love of learning and my passion for language, and gave me the chance to work with some of the smartest and most dedicated people one could hope to meet. I’m excited to get to know you, to understand your unique approach, and help you pursue your mission and make a more powerful impact.
